PHIL 347 Week 2 Assignment: Journal - Graded An A

Document Content and Description Below

Week 2 Journal Chamberlain College of Nursing PHIL 347: Critical Reasoning May 2020 Week 2 Journal The most important idea is that is the very first line of chapter 5. Making arguments and g... iving reasons to communicate the basis for our beliefs and decisions are universal in our species (Facione, P. & Gittens, C., 2016). Our beliefs play a direct and large role in the decisions that we make. It is one of the core guides that is the basis for who we are, how we talk, what we say, and how we act. It also goes hand in hand with what comes next in that there is the word why in every language (Facione, P. & Gittens, C., 2016). This helps with showing the meaning behind the belief. It leads to better understanding. When having a better understanding and being able to clarify the beliefs behind the context, it can show the true meaning and help settle or quell conflict that may arise. The concepts that were discussed in chapter 4 that would cause difficulty in the analysis of the statement would be vagueness and ambiguity. Vagueness is the when something does not have a level of certainty, distinctness, or clarity in regards to the subject and context at hand. An example of this would be the sentence, “John is slow”. We then have to find out what he is slow in. Could it just be that he walks slow, or is a slow driver? It could also be the more insidious and disrespectful meaning of that sentence in that is John mentally handicapped. Ambiguity means that there are several different interpretations to the subject. An example of this would be visiting family and relatives can be exhausting. This could be interpreted as going to family is exhausting or that when family visits it is exhausting. While both of the situations have the same outcome in that they are exhausting, a misunderstanding could arise in the place in which the exhaustion happens. Is the person at their house or are they visiting family in another house? When there is vagueness and ambiguity misunderstandings are more prevalent. This can lead to issues dependent on the subject. A belief the I hold is that would have multiple layers to it would be that the quarantine for the coronavirus should never have happened. I hold this belief because the closest to working and viable vaccine will most likely come middle to late next year. The coronavirus will most likely not leave and will be an annual virus like the flu. The first layer to this belief would be that people would become infected and most often would recover. These people would then have antibodies in their systems to help fight off the virus if it came again. The second layer to this belief would be that with enough people who have been infected and recovered, you would have what is called a herd immunity. This would help the people that are immunocompromised who would not be able to receive the vaccine anyway. The third layer to this belief is that with the heard immunity the spread of the virus would become less rapid as it would have trouble finding a host that does not have immunity and would kill it quickly. The fourth layer to this belief is that the antibodies in the already infected and recovered could be taken and given to the immunocompromised through what is called passive immunity. I know that letting people around each other will cause the virus to infect a lot of people very quickly. This might cause some death. I understand that. It is more based on the fact that this will bring the fastest results and will help the quickest. Allowing the virus to infect people with a strong indication that they would be able to whether it would create a large population of where the virus would have trouble moving around. I would create an immunity “barrier” through herd immunity, protecting those who have not been infected and who should not be infected. The people that cannot become infected could then receive passive immunity through getting transferred antibodies through plasma or blood transplants. References Facione, P. & Gittens, C. (2016).
