antacids ANS- neutralize stomach acid when swallowed. ex: amphogel digel, Mylanta, Maalox. anti-inflammatories ANS- treats inflammation, redness, swelling, pain, and heat. some are refered to as NS... AIDS- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. they include asprin containing drugs (salicylates), and ibuprofen doesn't contain asprin. ibuprofen (motrin), meloxicam (Mobic), naproxen (Naprosyn), nambumetone (Relafen), declofenac (voltaren) a cream. anti tussives ANS- they act on the brain to control coughing. most cough medicines contain dextromethorphan to suppress cough. prescription strength cough meds contain codeine antitussives are only ordered when cough doesn't produce sputum. anti neoplastics ANS- given to treat cancer. this classification of medicines are extremely toxic. causes serious side effects. topical medicines ANS- used to treat local lesion or it may be delivered systemically via a transdermal patch (cross the skin). transdermal meds are absorbed into blood stream through the skin. ex: nitroglycerin also used to deliver estrogen (Estraderm) scopolamine (trans-scop) clonidine (catapresl) and fentanyl. anti depressants ANS- relieve depression also prescribed to treat certain types of pain such as miagrains. ex: alprazolam (Xanax) sertraline (Zoloft), durexitine (Cymbalta), they work in different ways in the brain. monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) they can interact with certain foods and cause hypertension. antihistamines ANS- block the action of histamine which decreases allergy symptoms. diphenhydramine (Benadryl), loratidine (Claritin), also used to treat motion sickness. meclizine (antivert). anti psychotics ANS- psychoses. causes hallucinations, delusions, paranoia. the meds work by calming specific areas of the brain while allowing the rest of the brain to function normally. haloperidol (Haldol), chiorpromazine (thorazine), [Show More]
