HIST 405N Week 7 Case Study Assignment Option 3: American Domestic and Foreign Policies 1953-1991 – Graded An A+ As I continue to push forward on our journey in US history, I woul... d like to tell you about four presidents. Giving you a glance into their presidency what they did for the US economically and socially, policies, and how they served public interest. The four presidents I chose are Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, and Ronald W. Reagan. Dwight D. Eisenhower was Americas 34th president of the United States from 1953 to 1961. Petersen explains the president helped US economically during the 1958 recession. This recession was short lived lasted eight months during World War II. During this time many American were unemployed due to the population not purchasing vehicles or building/buying homes. This forced many Americans to unemployment. President pushed for more Agriculture projects to be done to increase the demand of raw materials such as lumber to create more jobs. He also extended unemployment benefits if American still couldn’t find labor they could still feed their families. To encourage American to build homes the benefit was in place for no down payment when purchasing your home. Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 was passed in Eisenhower which strengthen the US by creating even more jobs. This project was to be done over a ten-year period funded with 25 million dollars to assure the completion of the task. The highway was to span 41,000 miles. Some states put tollways in place to help with the payment although now paid off tollways stay in place for highway maintenance. Eisenhower served the public’s interest and continuing the cause for democracy by continuing The New Deal (that FDR started), expanded on social security, and prioritized a balanced budget over tax cuts. When Eisenhower heard of political parties trying to take away social security, he said “Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history.” He upheld the minimum wage to ensure Americans could provide for their families. (2017) John F Kennedy was Americas 35th president of the United States from January 1961 until his assassination in November 1963. Snyder tells us That John F Kennedy improved The United States economically and socially in various ways. When he first became president, he contributed billions of dollars into the economy instantaneously he didn't need congresses approval. President Kennedy put more money into the highways for Americans to have a way to be mobile. He also accelerated a payment method for farm price supports. he also made it so the American people would get a tax refund at the end of their long hard-working year. military serving a veteran would receive life insurance from their GI bills. he created food stamp programs to help Americans in need who are unable to feed their families. The policies that Kennedy brought forward for the American people for the most part strengthen do United States. One of those policies was federal aid to education providing Americans who want to further their education away to pay for it. this is something that college is still used to this day. John Fitzgerald Kennedy served to the public's interest by always hearing what the Americans wanted and did it to his best ability to make it happen. very unfortunate that he was assassinated only after 2 years of serving as president. Richard M. Nixon served as the 37th president of the United States from 1969 until 1974. According to Devoy, President Nixon did his best economically to help the Americans of the United States. he did so by-passing A new tax bill which would remove 2,000,000 Of the nation's poor from the tax roll and a repeal of the investment tax credit. Even with these in place economically they were not helping knowing they weren't helping Nixon put the budgeting back into congresses hands. although improvement did not happen instantaneously throughout his presidency economically America improved. President Nixon was apart of Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Mammal Marine Protection Act. The Clean Air Act of 1963 is a United States federal law designed to control air pollution on a national level. The Clean Water Act is the primary federal law in the United States governing water pollution. Its objective is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the nation's waters; recognizing the responsibilities of the states in addressing pollution and providing assistance to states to do so, including funding for publicly owned treatment works for the improvement of wastewater treatment; and maintaining the integrity of wetlands. The Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) was the first act of the United States Congress to call specifically for an ecosystem approach to wildlife management. All marine mammals are protected under the MMPA. The MMPA prohibits, with certain exceptions, the "take" of marine mammals in U.S. waters and by U.S. citizens on the high seas, and the importation of marine mammals and marine mammal products into the U.S. These policies help strengthen the confidence America had in President Nixon. Nixon serve the public interest by changing the welfare system. The Family Assistance Plan (FAP) was designed to largely replace the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) put in place by the New Deal and expanded under the Great Society. unlike the previous this system would provide money but also empower Americans to try and find a job without cutting them off from funding help them easier transition. Ronald Wilson Reagan served as the 40th president of the United States from 1981 to 1989. Hudson & Davies explain that Ronald Reagan was a fine 40th president of the United States. President Reagan put in place economic recovery act which insured reduction individual tax income rates President Reagan signed the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, which brought reductions in individual income tax rates Expanding depreciable properties providing incentives for small businesses to open giving incentives for Americans to save. Over his 8 year presidents here 20 million jobs were created, the inflation was dropped from 13.5% to a 4.1%, employment rate fell from 7.6% to 5.5%, families earnings increase from 20,000 to 50,000 annually which is a 27% increase, and a prime interest rate cut in half from 21.5% to 10%. Reagan's policies clearly speak for themselves when I say they strengthen United States they did. with Americans being able to create their own income without assistance from welfare and be able to own their own homes with a lower interest rate and not a fear of being unemployed is the first time in a while that American Society felt somewhat stable. president Reagan serve the public interest by listening to the fact that years have been going by with the unemployment rate at a high family not making enough money to provide he made it possible for these things to not to happen anymore. The question of is it constitutional for United States to fight preemptive wars. I would think yes no one can predict the future to know if it was necessary to fight the war. Just an example we did not get into the World War II, but Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. We were trying to stay neutral and not be in the war if we would have joined the war from the start maybe Pearl Harbor wouldn't have happened. Some people may say that us providing weapon agree to the allied parties is the reasoning for the bombing which is another theory. I do believe it is constitutional to fight preemptive wars America should have the decision and it should be brought up as a vote but at this time that's not how it works. Currently human rights and morality are the cornerstones of United States foreign policy and it should stay this way. Corbett explain that the US Ames to achieve security stability and prosperity with its allies around the world. assisting newly found across accuracies with its principles and developing democratic institution. To speak out against organizations that deny their citizens their fundamental freedoms because nobody wants a repeat of Adolf Hitler. This paper has taught me a lot about past presidents and their policies. Also, how much America has grown as a nation an improvement in employment, wages, and all-around humanity.
