SOCS-315 Week 5 Case Study Wk. 5 Discussion 1 After reading “Does Globalization Help or Hurt the World’s Poor?”, please answer the following: When considering the impact of globalization on... the poor, what other benefits or costs to globalization should also be taken into account? The idea of hybridization that is defined in the text, takes the foundation of cultural diffusion but argues that the interaction between foreign and local culture will influence the culture and cause changes to both. The McDonalds case study in the text can be used as an example, providing services all over the world, the menu is culturally popular. The interaction of diffusion results in changes to be culturally relevant while also opening job opportunities and catering to specific cultural societies (Mislan, 2012). How do these larger benefits or costs affect your analysis of the benefits or costs to the poor? It is the impact on the poor that can be seen in the third world countries, these countries are not able to keep up with the development in technologies and other forms of globalization. Most of the third world countries do not have social programs that help workers who have lost jobs. These job losses are because of the advancement of technology and development causing these workers to be unable to find work. It is the constraints that these people that are domestic. The lack of credit or access to it, the poor infrastructure, corrupt government, and weak states are just a few of the obstacles standing in the way of opportunities for the poor (Ghimire, 2006). In what ways do they outweigh them? Depending on the country, political and foreign affairs and the like, if appropriate domestic policies can be put into place, the poor does not necessarily need to remain poor as technology advances (Mislan, 2012) and educating the poor to advance with the technology.
