What Is Graphic Design? Graphic design is the art and practice of creating and communicating ideas in visual and textual form. You can communicate graphic design as images, words, or symbols in phy... sical or virtual forms. Graphic design is all around us. You can see it around you in a variety of forms. From the time you have breakfast (and notice the design on your cereal box) to the time when you drive back home (and see a movie poster on a billboard), you’ll find the work of graphic designers everywhere. You will see graphic design in everyday media such as newspapers and magazines, TV serials, and websites, and in open public places such as restaurants, malls, and parking lots. Graphic artwork can be of any size—from the design of a small coin to a national traffic signage system, or from a company’s website to the global digital and physical content of an international business magazine. It can be for any purpose—educational, social, commercial, political, or cultural. Graphic design enables you to solve problems visually. As a graphic designer, you’ll typically use illustrations, symbols, photography, colors, and text to solve visual problems for your clients in a variety of fields, such as branding, packaging, publishing, advertising, and digital design. You may design a variety of visuals, such as corporate reports, event posters, concert tickets, websites, and so on. All these creations rely on effective design to catch the audience’s attention and to convey what the client wants to say. Typically, you will use different designs to help clients solve problems visually. You may need to visualize and communicate a client’s brand name or logo in a vivid and memorable way that enables customers to recognize and relate to a product. You may design product packaging with appealing design features that attract customers to a shop shelf, or book covers that attract readers in a bookstore. You may create an eye-catching advertisement that helps your client’s product get audience attention on television or in newspapers.
