Conner Clark AP History pd. 6 12/10/14 Document Based Question In what ways and to what extent did constitutional and social developments between 1860 and 1877 amount to a revolution? From the b... eginning of the Civil War to the end of Reconstruction, the United States went through a period of significant change. Events like the secession of the South, the ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments; Lincoln's Assassination and groups like the KKK set up the stage for this revolution. The secession of the South played one of the biggest roles in amounting a revolution. A chunk of the United States ripped away from the other. There were many reasons why the Southerners wanted to become their own nation: the North was controlling their rights and “...certain duties were imposed upon the several states, and the exercise of certain of their powers [were] restrained…” (Doc. A); They were a minority and had no representation in government thus not being able to create any laws that appease themselves. This cession sparks the Civil War. The North wanting to end the war quickly, ratified the 13th amendment which prohibited slavery in every state of America except for the slave states on the Union side because the Union needed the border states to stay so as to have an advantage of population and land on the South. A few months before the election of 1868 rolled around, blacks wanted to be able to vote because they were free.
