Florida Gulf Coast University University Colloquium-IDS 3920 CRN 51132 06/27/2021 Babcock Ranch Babcock Ranch is hoping to be a haven for those who individuals who care about the environment and ... wish to see a more sustainable future. This haven is located just outside of northern Lee County, roughly a thirty-minute drive north from my own home. The entire goal of this community is to attempt to live sustainably and to support the care of the environment, while also remaining profitable and ensuring the success, health, and happiness of its residents. In other words, the main goal of this small town is to support the triple bottom line. This town was started from scratch as opposed toa modifying a current town to meet the needs and achieve the set goals. While it could have been more beneficial to leave all the land as a preservation and remodel a current town so as not the disturb any potential wildlife, the areas being built upon were previously damaged due to farming and mining. That does not mean that the land would have recovered and supported nature at some point, so this brings forth the question on whether this was done because building from scratch was a simpler and cheaper option. The primary components of sustainability tend to be water and electricity. No matter how hard an individual or community may try currently it is impossible to avoid producing any waste but improving the water quality and leaning towards renewable resources whenever possible is the most we can currently ask for until better methods are created [Show More]
