*NURSING > PROJECT FINAL > New York University NURSING MISC Better Than All The Wrist - Final Nursing Project-REVIEWED AND EDIT (All)
Part 2 (a): Hospital and Nursing Unit Organizational Characteristics We shadowed nurses at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital located at 301 East 17th Street in Gramercy Park, Manhattan. There are a to... tal of 225 beds with 7 designated as “Coma Recovery,” 144 “Medical/Surgical,” 51 “Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,” and 23 “Traumatic Brain Injury” (NYS Health Profile, 2020). The Orthopedic Hospital is part of the broader NYU Langone Health System, which is composed of a total of six facilities---Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn, and NYU Winthrop Hospital. The Orthopedic Hospital is a specialty facility that focuses on orthopedic surgeries and rehabilitation. This includes work with patients suffering from “brain injury, joint pain, osteoporosis, and overuse injuries” (NYU Hospital Website, 2020). The Hospital has received many awards and recognitions. Some of these awards include Magnet status for the past four consecutive years, the Quality Leadership Award, the Vizient Ambulatory Care Quality and Accountability Award, the Grade A Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, and the Gold Seal of Approval by the Joint Commission. There are a mix of demographics in NYU Langone Hospital. In 2018, it was reported that the patients the hospital served were 47% White, 21% “Other race”, 13% African American (Black), 5% Chinese, 7% Unknown, 1% Patient refused to answer, 1% Asian, 1% Asian Indian, and 2% Other (NYU Langone Health in the Community, 2019). Nursing Unit Characteristics The specific unit that we were able to work on had 20 rooms with most of them containing two beds each, so approximately 40 beds on the floor (NYU Medical Center, 2020). These rooms are arranged in a rectangular floor design with a central square that consists of the nursing stations, supply closets, and medication dispensaries. The unit is designated as a Spine and Ortho Specialty Unit. When we were on the unit there were around 5 or 6 nurses with approximately 4 or 5 UAPs that assisted with taking vitals and “checking-in” with the patients about anything they may need. Through observations, it appears that the unit uses a primary nursing care delivery model. In this model, one nurse is assigned to each patient to manage and delegate all tasks regarding that patient’s care. [Show More]
