Running head: CULTURAL FACTORS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON MEDICATIONS 1 Cultural Factors and Their Influence on Medications This paper will discuss the cultural factors that can influence the medication... administration process in Hispanic populations. Hispanic is the term that refers to people whose origin or descent is from Latin American regions such as Mexico, Central America, and certain Caribbean and South American countries. Hispanics believe in the hot/cold theory, which regulates basic bodily functions as in temperature, dryness, and moisture. They believe that treatment of diseases may have added liquids, treatments, or foods that add or subtract cold, heat, dryness, and moisture to restore the balance of the body’s essential substances, called "humors" (March, & Smith, 2018). The majority of Hispanics accept the Western medical model of health care; however, the use of complementary medicine is still supported and include homemade and folk remedies, such as herbs, teas, syrups, lotions, and preparations made from traditional medicinal plants. These items are commonly available from traditional neighborhood markets, or stores that sell herbs and roots. Many of these products have not been proven safe and effective, but in some cases may be harmful. The impact on medication administration on Hispanic patients may be related to the need to have an interpreter for directions on use of the drugs prescribed. Also, it is vital to reassure understanding to prevent the side effects that some herbs, foods, and homemade preparations may have on some medications (March, & Smith, 2018). It is important to take into consideration that Hispanics may have mixed descendants from other ethnic groups. There is great biologic diversity among Latin Americans, who can have European, Native American, and Asian biomarkers. It is necessary for nurses to look for undesired side effects of some drugs that are common in some other populations that may be observed in Hispanics as well.
