Trait- A feature of an organism (eyes, hair color, height) Genetics- The study of heredity, or how the characteristics of living things are transmitted from one generation to the next. Cross-fertil... ization- The fertilization of an organism by the fusion of an egg from one individual with a sperm or male gamete from a different individual (like cross pollination) Hybrid- The result of mixing, through sexual reproduction, two animals or plants of different breeds, varieties, species or genera. (lion and tiger) Monohybrid cross- A genetic cross between parents that differ in the alleles they possess for one gene, one parent having two dominant alleles and the other two recessives. (all offspring have 1 dominant and 1 recessive gene) Allele- An allele is one of the possible forms of a gene. (usually a dominate and recessive) Example: Xx Homozygous- When an individual has two of the same allele, whether dominant or recessive, they are homozygous. Ex: XX or xx Heterozygous- Heterozygous means having one each of two different alleles. Ex: Xx Dominant- An allele or gene that masks the recessive allele or gene.
