Case Study: Mrs. G Jennifer J. Taylor Chamberlain University NR 601: Primary Care of the Maturing and Aged Family The case study that was presented to the class is about a patient, Mrs. G., a 56-... year old Hispanic female who presents to the office with complaints of fatigue, increased appetite, increased thirst, increased urination during the day and night, no energy and weight gain. The onset of her symptoms was 3 months ago, and she has been gaining weight since menopause of last year. She reports she even joined the gym and must force herself to go twice a week to walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes in an attempt to lose weight, but she has been unsuccessful. In this case study assignment, we will look at the subjective and objective findings that were collected and use them to assist in diagnosing Mrs. G. as well as creating an appropriate management plan. We will also apply the national diabetes guidelines and include them in the patient’s management plan. This management plan will also include this patient’s appropriate diagnostics used to determine the diagnosis, medications prescribed and costs, patient education, any referrals, and follow-up care. Assessment Primary Diagnosis – Type 2 diabetes with unspecified complications (E11.8). Pathophysiology - Type 2 diabetes is a chronic, multisystem, metabolic syndrome of gradual onset that occurs when your fat, liver, and muscle cells do not respond the right way to insulin, and there is impaired pancreatic production of insulin. When this occurs, the sugar cannot be stored in these cells, so an elevated level of sugar builds up in the bloodstream. The signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes include polydipsia, polyuria, weight changes, recurrent infections, fatigue, prolonged wound healing, and polyphagia (McCarthy, 2019). [Show More]
