Alternative methods of preventative care have been around for hundreds of years. These methods can be used in complementary and alternatives to traditional western medicine. According to Johns Hopki... ns Medicine (n.d.), “in the United States, complementary and alternative medicine is used by about 38% of adults and 12% of children”. Methods such as acupuncture, yoga, and the use of herbal medicine are a few types of alternative methods of preventative care. Acupuncture is a treatment that utilizes small needles inserted into specific areas of the body to achieve relief of pain. It is considered a traditional Chinese medicine that focuses on creating a balance of life forces. Acupuncture has been recognized in helping to alleviate acute and chronic pains such as low-back pain, neck pain, and knee pain (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 2016). The limitations of acupuncture are due to limited research on how the effectiveness acupuncture has on the brain and body has.
