Measure the diameter of each of the bolts, the cross sectional area of each of the bars, and the net cross sectional areas at each drilled hole. 2. Connect two of the bars using a lap joint (single shear). 3. Connect the remaining bars as a butt joint with a cover plate on each side of the joint. 4. Assume that the tensile strength of the bars and the shear strength of the bolts is 60 ksi, and calculate the maximum load required to cause failure in both of the test specimen setups. 5. Select the proper range on the testing machine for the lap joint specimen. Insert the specimen and pull in tension until failure occurs. 6. Repeat step 5 for the butt joint specimen. [Show More]
