(Version 1) NR 500 Week 3 Graded Assignment; Addressing Bias (A GUARANTEED) Addressing Bias We all have biases about people and things we deal with. Nurses are not exception to this. Bias and prej... udice can impact patient care and health disparities of those who are biased against. Bias can lead to intentional or nonintentional disparities in care (CCN, lesson 3, 2017). Acknowledging prejudice which is an explicit bias is an important step in addressing this issue. Bias against gender, race, sexual orientation and obesity are the most relevant among healthcare providers (Dunagan, Kimble, Gunby & Andrew, 2016). Discussion of Bias Family nurse practitioner is a profession that I chose to pursue. As a primary care role in healthcare, this profession also has potential of bias against its specific patient population based on gender, sexual orientation, age, religions and more. For example, a nurse practitioner might consider a senior patient who became forgetful as a part of aging process when it might indicate onset of other underling disease. It is estimated that about 70% of American are overweight. The care given to these populations are influenced by their obese status (Ward-Smith, & Peterson, 2016). A nurse practitioner might consider a patient who is obese as a result of unhealthy lifestyle when it could be a result of insulin resistance or undiagnosed diabetes. Depending on the attitude and belief of the nurse practitioner, the treatment approach can be very different. [Show More]
