The Synthesis of Triphenylmethanol from Benzophenone Via a Grignard Reaction Cydni Scott Lab Partner: Andrew Davis TA: Raymond Seibel Tuesday at 8:30AM PSE 307 Abstract The purpose of this exper... iment was to observe the mechanisms of a Grignard reaction by performing a synthesis of triphenylmethanol from benzophenone. After the reaction was completed, the product, triphenylmethanol, was isolated using two extraction methods. The first was an ether extraction and the second was an aqueous extraction. The extracted product was crystallized in order to purify it. After purification, the product was a fine, white/translucent crystal. The product was characterized two different ways: by finding its melting range and obtaining its IR spectrum. The percent yield of the final purified product was 87.1Introduction A Grignard reaction is characterized by the addition of a magnesium halide to an aldehyde or a ketone in order to form a secondary or tertiary alcohol (Grignard Reaction, n.d.). These reactions are useful because they serve as a crucial tool in performing important carboncarbon bond forming reactions (Arizona State University, 2018).
