Laboratory 6: Building models of Organic compounds Learning Objectives: Learn about structure of organic compounds by building models Draw extended structural formulas of Organic compounds ... Compounds that are based on the carbon atom are known as organic compounds. These compounds commonly contain, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen in addition to carbon. Carbon forms a variety of covalent compounds with varied properties. Carbon containing compounds are formed with nonmetals by sharing electrons (covalent bonds). Most biomolecules as well as most drugs are classified as organic compounds. In this laboratory exercise, we will build models of organic compounds and draw extended structural formula of organic compounds. Materials: Molecular Modeling Kit Note: Be sure to build each of the compounds as instructed using the model kit. This hands-on experience is an important part of this lab. Please take the time to explore the structures of these organic compounds. Exploration 1: Hydrocarbons (Complete before class) Hydrocarbons are a diverse group of organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons can be linear, branched, or cyclic. Hydrocarbons can be saturated, unsaturated or aromatic. Part 1A: Definitions Hydrocarbon: An organic compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen. Saturated hydrocarbon: An alkane; a compound of carbon and hydrogen with only single bonds. Unsaturated hydrocarbon: An alkene, alkyne, or aromatic hydrocarbon; a hydrocarbon containing one or more double or triple bonds or aromatic rings. Part 1B: Naming of Hydrocarbons Linear hydrocarbons can be divided in three categories- Alkane, alkene and alkyne. Complete the table below for naming the linear hydrocarbons.
