RUNNING HEAD: Painting Analysis & Reflection 1 Painting Analysis & Reflection Introduction to Humanities September 15, 2019 Painting Analysis & Reflection 2 The artist I chose is Frida Kahl... o and the painting’s name henry ford hospital created in 1932. Frida had a very rough life filled with tragedy no doubt. According to Schon (1992) “at the age of just 6 years old she had polio which left her with a limp. At the age of 18 she was riding the bus when there was an accident and a steel handrail implanted through her. (p. 158). She later found out she would never bear children because of this accident. At the beginning of this paper I was very confused as to what artistic movement truly meant for Frida. Stated perfectly by Fields (2012) “feminist art movement refers to the efforts and accomplishments of feminists internationally to produce art that reflects women's lives and experiences, as well as to change the foundation for the production and reception of Painting Analysis & Reflection 3 contemporary art.” (p. 3). At this time there was not very many female artists producing artwork it was very male dominant field for success. It wasn't until after Frida's death that her art became famous. Woman of this time worked together to inspire one another to continue producing works of art. Frida was inspired by her own tragedy to begin producing art. When Freda began to paint, she started off with a subject she knew well which was herself her first painting was a self- portrait. Frida contribute to this feminist movement by producing paintings that expressed what women go through on a daily basis. Her famous arts are of miscarriages, pregnancies menstruation, and breastfeeding all things that are specific to women tough subjects to talk about at times. She put them in her painting to make people talk about these tough topics. The way she presented these topics in your painting was surrealism. Mention by Moriuchi (2018) “Frida allows for bystanders to know what it’s like to be in inside a women’s mind and heart and let us study all secrets that lie within women.” (p. 777). Stylistic influence was her own husband who used surrealism, and this is what Frida used in a lot of her work. “Surrealism is a deep imagine of a super reality putting imagines of canvas that represent objects about the artist in their own way.” (Biography of Frida Kahlo). She used surrealism in this painting that I chose one aspect is the pelvis in the picture representing her accident and what was taken from her. One of Frida’s political influences was the Mexican Revolutionary War. In a biography about Frida mentioned “Frida would lie and say she was born in 1910 so she could be directly related to the revolution. Mentioned in Frida’s journals her mother would usher Frida and her sister in the house as gunfire echoed the streets.” (Biography of Frida Kahlo). From Mexican revolutionary war inspiration in 1932 Freda painted a photo of herself at the border between the Painting Analysis & Reflection 4 United States of America and Mexico. In this painting it's a clear line between The United States and Mexico with Frida in the middle holding a Mexican flag showing where her loyalties lie. I feel like after just 2 weeks of this class I've learned to appreciate all different art forms and that not every artist is the same. Something can be painted in 2 pictures and they can have very different meanings you should do your research about someone before diving in a criticism of that artwork or that person. I feel like to understand the content of anyone's art you must stop investigate their background and what would inspire them too paint that particular piece of art. This art piece opened my eyes that not every piece of art needs to be beautiful in order to send a message. After doing my research on Frida and knowing her background as to why she painted everything she did is truly moving. She had a very rough life in every art piece she showed that and that's very raw and inspiring to see putting private details out there for everyone to know. This also helped me understand the context of her art in this piece she is laying in a bed connected to 6 cords representing her struggle with miscarriages her struggle after the accident the slow recovery her broken uterus. “Participative experiences of works of art communions experiences so full and fruitful that they enrich our lives.” (Martin &Jacobus, 2018, p. 23). Another reason I had picked Frida I knew she was a Mexican artist and I thought I would find out a little more on her because she's an inspiration to me because I am a Mexican American and just to get a little history for myself.
