CASE STUDY: A YOUNG GIRL WITH STRANGE BEHAVIORS 2 Case Study: A Young Girl with Strange Behaviors In this case study, the patient is an 13-year-old Hispanic female who is brought in by her mothe... r and father. They report that they were referred by their primary care provider because Carrie’s behavior has been difficult to manage and they don’t know what to do. The purpose of this paper is to examine the case study: A Young Girl with Strange Behaviors. Make assessments at three decision points that would be most appropriate based on the information provided and then answer a series of questions regarding the decision made. Additional diagnostic Tests that Could be Done Currently, there are no radiological, laboratory, or psychometric tests for the diagnosis of early onset schizophrenia disorder (American Psychiatric Association[APA], 2013). However, individuals with schizophrenia tend to have neurological issues with motor coordination, sensory integration, and motor sequencing of complex movements(APA, 2013). So a neurological exam would be warranted along with a comprehensive psychological battery of tests to assess personality and cognitive functioning (Stahl, 2013). Decision #1 Based on the information provided in this case study, my diagnosis for Carrie would be early-onset schizophrenia. Information that supports this diagnosis includes the following: Reports by Carrie’s parents that she has friends “half human and half-cat” and “spirits” that speak with her “in her head.” Carrie also endorses hearing and seeing strange “things that I talk to” as well as delusions that people on the TV are playing programs “just for her” and commercials can tell her “what to do.” Additionally, her affect is somewhat constricted, her eye contact minimal and she seems preoccupied during the interview. Another indicator that supports the diagnosis of schizophrenia is that there is a family history of the illness. [Show More]
