NR 505 Week 1 Reflection on Learning NR 505 Week 1: Reflection on Learning In week 1, I learned that evidence-based practice (EBP) is a scientific inquiry through which healthcare profession... als gather scientific evidence that they can use to promote patient preferences, manage disease symptoms, enhance end-of-life and palliative care, and influence healthcare policies (Hain, 2017). I have a practical experience regarding EBP as I recently practiced nursing in a particular healthcare facility in New York City. Specifically, nurses in this practiced EBP by reviewing the research published in some nursing journals to evaluate the significance of some infection control techniques like wearing protective clothing, strict handwashing policies, and sanitizing the healthcare environment. Indeed, the nursing department had formulated a policy directing all nurses to always apply EBP as the basis for quality improvement. Essentially, the successful implementation of EBP depends on both individual-level and organizational-level factors. Individual-level factors that support EBP embody nurse's beliefs and confidence in applying its procedures, educational level, and experience in healthcare. At the organizational level, facilities succeed in implementing EBP if they have supportive leadership, resources for supporting the scientific inquiry, and the existence of a culture of continuous improvement. Unfortunately, I observed specific barriers that hindered the implementation of EBP in this facility's nursing department, such as nurse shortage and heavy workload. The heavy workload particularly limits the time that nurses spend in searching and analyzing relevant literature (Greenhalgh, 2019). As a nurse practitioner, I will be responsible for initiating research on a particular nursing specialty area. The primary role of nursing practitioners involves maintaining clinical competency in their areas of practice (Gray et al., 2017). For example, nurse practitioners may specialize in pediatrics, oncology, orthopedic and neonatal care. Therefore, a nurse practitioner initiates, synthesizes, and appraises research to ensure that junior staffs investigate issues according to quality standards (Gray et al., 2017).
