Student Name: Click here to enter text. Access Code (located on the lid of your lab kit): Pre-Lab Questions: 1. In what areas are lymph nodes clustered? Why is this desirable? The area where l... ymph nodes are clustered are near the groin and neck areas. These area are desirable for lymph nodes because the orifices of the body are concentrated in the head. Therefore, the neck lymph nodes protect the body against any foreign invaders that may come through the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth. However, the groin lymph nodes are another desriable location because they ward off any invaders that may enter through the urinary, genital, or anus areas. 2. Explain how the flow of lymph is controlled through lymphatic vessels. The flow of lymph is controlled through lymphatic vessels because there are valves that travel one-way to guarantee the lymph is flowing towards the heart. The lymph is able to flow from the lymphatic capillaries to the lymphatic vessels. Allowing the lymph to continue flowing through lymphatic ducts into the circulatory system. Experiment 1: Examining the Microscopic Anatomy of Lymphatic System Post-Lab Questions 1. Label the items in the following slide pictures based on your observations. A- Lymphoid Follicle B- Germinal Center C- Connective Tissue Capsule D- Medula E- Red Pulp F- White Pulp 2. Are there more afferent or efferent vessels attached to a lymph node? What is the functional purpose of this? There are more afferent vessels than efferent vessels attached to a lymph node. The function of this is so the lymphs move slower to the afferent vessels to give them time to clean.. 3. What structural similarities did you observe between the lymph node and spleen? Some similarities I observed between the Lymph nodes and the Spleen is that you can see the B cells, Lymphocytes and the B cells. Experiment 2: The Virtual Model – The Lymphatic System Insert screenshot of the spleen: Insert screenshot of the thoracic duct: Insert screenshot of the axillar lymph node: Post-Lab Questions 1. Is the cisterna chyli or the spleen more medial to the spinal cord? The crsterna Chyli is more medial to the spinal cord to the spinal cord. 2. What is the name of the most superior lymph nodes in the head region? Preauricular Lymph Nodes are the most superior lymph nodein the head region. 3. Where are the popliteal nodes located? The popliteal nodes are located behind the knees. 4. What are the most inferior lymph nodes in the body called? The most inferior lymph nodes are called the popliteal lymph nodes. 5. What component of the lymphatic system filters lymph from the upper limbs and upper external prat of the thorax? The component of the lymphatic system that filters lymph from the upper limps and upper external part of the thorax is the subclavian trunks which secretes lymph from the upper limbs and upper external part of the thorax. Experiment 3: Fetal Pig Dissection: The Lymphatic System Insert photo of your pig’s exposed spleen with your name and access code handwritten clearly in the background: Post-Lab Questions 1. What observations did you make regarding the lymphatic system of the fetal pig? In regards to the lymphatic system of the fetal pig I was able to create many observations. Observations such as, the lymhatic system being difficult to find in the body then some of the other systems of the fetal pig. I was able to observe that the organs such as the spleen and the thymus are easier to find then the lymphatic vessels and nodes. 2. Compare and contrast the vessels of the lymphatic system and the circulatory system. The similarities and differences the lymphatic and circulatory system are as it follows. Some of the differences between these two systems are that the circulatory system has to pump the heart pushing blood throughout the body. While the lymphatic system relies on contraction of the skeletal muscles, lymphatic vessels, and the thoracic pressure pump to move lymph throughout the body. While, they are also similarities between these two systems as they both have one-way valves. This is so that fluids are able to move to prevent backflow. Both the lymphatic and circulatory system take a part in the immunity system. Which, both help to take part in keeping the body defended against bacteria and viruses. Both the lymphatic and circulatory systems contain white blood cells, however, only the circulatory system contains red blood cells. [Show More]
