NR 503 Week 1 Discussion; Exercise and Discussion Questions from Curley Text Book

Document Content and Description Below

Dr. Bethel and class, According to Chamberlain College of Nursing (2016), the study of epidemiology involves analyzing the risk factors of a disease in a given population. Furthermore, the primary ... goal of the study is to analyze the ‘why’ of the development of a disease. In conclusion, the epidemiological study will recommend a plan to screen, treat, prevent, and monitor the disease process. In 1948, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), formed the Framingham Heart Study (FHS) to identify common characteristics that contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Moreover, the FHS study recruited a cohort of 5,209 men and women between the ages of 30 and 62. The study lasted over a period of three generations of participants and included those individuals who had not developed symptoms of cardiovascular disease or suffered a heart attack or stroke. It is important to realize, the FHS study added offspring cohort participants in 1971, 1994, 2002, and 2003 to identify the common factors of CVD in generations. In 2013, the FHS celebrated 65 years since its first investigation into the epidemiology of CVD and its risk factors (Framingham Heart Study, 2016). According to Hajar (2016), CVDs are disorders of the heart and blood vessels. As an illustration, poor health habits lead to abnormal plaque buildup eventually leading to an acute heart attack or stroke event. Under those circumstances, the pathological study of heart disease came from the results of the FHS. Consequently, it is interesting to note that after several years of monitoring the FHS population a major milestone uncovered (a) body mass index, (b) high blood cholesterol, (c) cigarette smoking, (d) high blood pressure, (e) obesity, and diabetes as heart disease risk factors. For this reason, our hospital system uses similar required documentation criteria to guide our primary care physicians (PCPs) towards standardize care for better patient outcomes. In like manner, our quality department will routinely perform chart audits to ensure that our providers are preforming annual screenings and recommended followup care. Finally, As a result, we use this historical CVD information to treat coronary diseases and improve our patient’s quality of life. Reference Chamberlain College of Nursing (2016).
