NR 394 Transcultural Nursing Week 3: Course Project Part 1 Directions: Prior to completing this template, carefully review Week 3: Course Project Part 1 Directions paying attention to how to name ... the document and all rubric requirements. Your Name: Cultural Community Needs 1. Describe specific culture/ethnic population selected in detail. In this study, I want to learn more about the issue of obesity within the Hispanic community. I will mainly focus on the female adolescent demographics. In recent years, cases of obesity among female adolescent Hispanics have increased, and as a result, most of them are the risk of having a stroke, diabetes, or heart disease. According to Healthypeople.gov (2020), the prevalence of obesity among the Hispanic female adolescents is twice that of non-Hispanic ethnicity. Furthermore, they are known have a faster BMI (Body Mass Index) increases and likely to have glucose dysregulation than other adolescents from other ethnicities (Isasi, Rastogi, & Molina, 2016). The female adolescents are mostly affected because they are exposed to socioeconomic disadvantages, less involved in physical activities, and engage in improper diet behavior. Therefore, the demographic is exposed to several disparities which increase cases of obesity. 2. Describe rationale for selecting this population. I mainly want to understand how these disparities are contributing to increased obesity cases. This involves learning cultural practices of my chosen demographic that are leading to the increase. There is a need to understand how the disparities can be addressed to reduce the cases. Generally, I want to know how to reduce the number of female adolescent Hispanics who are classified as obese. Also, the plan is to provide more information of the demographics as it is quite scarce. 3. Describe a cultural/ethnic need within your area, clinical practice, or community. The community is striving to reduce cases of obesity and its related complications among female adolescents. According to healthypeople.gov (2020), teenage obesity is becoming a health concern within the Hispanic community that needs to be addressed. Community members are strongly advocating for healthy nutrition practices, socioeconomic equality, and increased health insurance coverage. It has been determined that these disparities are enhancing the prevalence of obesity among teenagers. 4. Describe the approved health issue from your chosen cultural population. Obesity is increasingly becoming common among female adolescent Hispanics who exposed to morbid heath issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Furthermore, obesity lower not the quality of health of teenagers but also academic performance and psychosocial functioning. Other obesity related cases include cancer high cholesterol, cancer, and high blood pressure. Often, teenagers who are obese are more likely to remain overweight into their adult stage whereby the risks of severe chronic disease increases. The fact that a female Hispanic teenager is twice likely to be obese, there is a need to lower the cases. The demographic needs to be taught some of the healthy eating habits and address disparities. Details of the Health Issue 1. Describe how the health issue is based on the Leading Health Indicator (LHI) priorities from Healthy People. According to healthypeople.gov (2020), obesity is becoming a costly and serious health issue among teenagers, especially female Hispanics. Thus, the issue is ranked as a high priority issue. It has been determined that approximately 16.2 percent of teenagers in the United States are obese and at the risk of having diabetes type 2, stroke, and cardiovascular disease (healthypeople.gov, 2020). The obesity-related diseases are categorized among conditions with the highest number of deaths. Furthermore, it increases medical costs making it difficult to seek care especially for people without insurance or below the poverty line. Healthypeople.gov believe that addressing obesity can significantly reduce medical cost and generally improve health status in the United States. 2. Describe the reason why the health issue was selected. The issue was selected because of the increasing number of obesity cases especially among teenagers form lower social class. The Healthy People want to raise awareness obesity so that its number can decrease and not to overwhelm medical care industry. Also, they aimed to share some tips that help reduce obesity such as participating in regular physical activities, maintaining healthy weight, and eating healthy diets. 3. Why it is important to focus on this health issue? It will help reduce medical cost and burden brought by obesity in healthcare industry, especially for female Hispanic teenagers who come from disadvantaged socioeconomic background. Also, focusing on obesity helps understand why it is more prevalent in the Hispanic community and what are some of the things that need to be addressed to tackle the problem. Thus, the topic helps understand the Hispanic culture in the process. Furthermore, tackling the issue highlights that the problem is not only affecting the Hispanic community alone, but also other minority ethnicities. Generally, addressing the issue of obesity offers the opportunity to discuss solutions to solving the crisis for everyone in the United States. Therefore, this reduces cases of obesity, medical costs, and improves healthy practices. Clinical Impact 1. How can this content be related to clinical practice in general? The information is essential because it helps medical practitioners understand some of the practices that facilitate obesity among teenagers especially from the minority groups. Furthermore, they will know some of the measures to tackle the obesity problem without disrespecting or devaluing cultural practices of other communities. Also, the information will serve as a guideline for understanding the reasons why obesity is more common among female teenagers than their male counterparts. 2. How do the cultural community needs and details of the health issue impact your area, clinical practice, or community? It helps me know and understand some of the health issues affecting the community and what are the necessary intervention measures to take in addressing them. Also, the information helps me understand some of the cultural practices in the Hispanic community especially for female teenagers. I also believe that the information will help me develop better healthcare practices. [Show More]
