e Adult Learner & Resource Management  Resource management is key to success.  A successful person/student knows their key resources. o Knowing how to use the resources that they are given at... the appropriate time.  The Adult Learner – one who acquires knowledge & skills. Types of Adult Learners Traditional adult learner o Comes to an educational program directly from high school or from another program of study. o Grew up in a digital, wireless world. o In transition from late adolescence to young adulthood. Returning (Nontraditional) adult learner o Been out of school for several years. o Experiencing many different life transitions. Personal Resources  Many personal resources can facilitate success in a practical/vocational program. o Academic Resources. o Social support services. The Five Generations  People born around the same time generally develop a generational personality of how they think & what they value.  This personality is shaped by a common history of cultural events, images, & experiences. Generations:  Matures (The Silent Generation) born 1925 & 1945  Baby Boomers (Boomers) born between 1946 & 1954  Generation X (Gen X) born between 1965 & 1980  Generation Y (Millennials/Net Generation) born between 1981 & 1994  Generation Z born after 1994 Characteristics of the Five Generations Traditionalist (The Silent Generation)  Depending on birth year, generational personalities may be shaped by the Great Depression, World War II, &/or the Korean War.  More conservative, prefer formal titles, & more formal with intrapersonal interactions.  Consider work an obligation, prefer 1-to-1 meetings & formal memos.  Digital immigrants  may be reluctant to use technology & need more hands on training Baby Boomers  Depending on birth year, generational personalities may be shaped by Watergate, the Vietnam War, the space race, civil rights, women’s liberation, & the assassinations of John & Robert Kennedy & Martin Luther King.  Dedicated, highly motivated & hard-working, idealistic.  Prefer learning in a relaxed, organized, & respectful atmosphere  group discussions.  Digital immigrants  varying technology skills.
