Diagnostic Skill The purpose of this assess... ment is to demonstrate and provide an understanding of the American Psychiatric Association DSM-5 (2013) criteria and DSM-5 Differential Diagnosis Trees (2013). Presenting two case studies, the author will discuss concerns, differential diagnosis, symptom checklists, systemic assessment, DSM codes, ICS codes and necessary medical referral or consultations. Presenting Concerns: Case of Jenny Jenny has stated she is feeling discouraged, pressured by her mother and frequently exhausted. Jenny says she has lost interest in being around friends, going on dates and having low energy. Jenny also reports a loss of motivation, frequent naps, loss of appetite and feeling hopelessness. Jenny has been experiencing tension with her mother, Barbra because she has been pushing her to be more sociable with friends. Barbra is not aware of how low Jenny feels and Barbra has told Jenny she is lazy. A variety of biological and neurological factors could be a root cause in Jenny's case. Depression is linked to lower serotonin levels in which SSRI's such as Lexapro and Prozac (Marvel & Paradiso, 2008) can be helpful in Jenny's case. Marvel & Paradiso (2008) state that individuals at higher risk of depression are those with family members diagnosed with a mood disorder.
