Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different styles of approaching conflict. Advantages of different styles of approaching conflict include the ability to understand what needs to take place... in any given conflict and the process that is needed to solve the conflict in a timely manner. Establishes open communication to solve the conflict by not only focusing on one specific way of approaching conflict you are effectively taking away the possibility you cannot solve the conflict using one of the five styles of conflict resolution. Using many different styles insures that no matter the issue or personnel involved you can always come up with a way to solve the conflict. Disadvantages of using different styles of approaching conflict can include counterproductivity. If you are focused on just one style of approaching conflict you may focus on the wrong style initially and lose both parties involved in the conflict from the get go. This in turn makes the argument counterproductive to what it is you are truly trying to accomplish. Which approach do you use? Give an example of why you used this approach. Out of the five styles of approaching conflict; avoidance, competition, accommodation, compromise, and collaboration I find that I utilize the competition style while at work and the collaboration style while at home. At work being that I work with Marines everything is a competition and therefore we utilize this style of approaching conflict the most. You are always trying to assert dominance over each other to show you are the “Alpha Male” of the group and therefore will not take no for an answer. An example of this would be when we must provide ideas for training our Marines as a collective staff we all provide ideas and bring them up in a round table meeting format for implementation. While doing this we continually poke holes in each other’s plans to show ours is the better idea instead of taking pieces of one and implementing them into another to make a perfect plan we just compete for who can give the best idea, or least flawed. Meanwhile, at home I use the collaboration approach with my wife and daughter. An example of this would be when we decide where to go on the weekend my daughter of course wants to go somewhere that she can play while my wife and I want to go somewhere to relax and enjoy ourselves. A collaboration between the three of us allows us to understand what each other want and choose a location that can fit all our wants and desires. For example my daughter wanted to go somewhere that she can play in water, meanwhile my wife and I just wanted to relax and not do anything after a stressful week, so we choose the beach as the perfect spot as it provides my daughter her wants and we get ours as well.
