Do you agree with this statement, or not? In your post, please refer to both Impressionist images and earlier art to support your discussion. Impressionism is an art movement that started around the 19 century which featured artists painting pictures with “freely brushed colors that took precedence over lines and contours” (“Impressionism”, n.d.), in essence, impressionists rejected th/ the classical way of portraying a subject and instead favored modernity by craving to make art works that mirrored the real world around them. I agree with the statement that impressionism is the Õrst, true modern art style mainly because it was the Õrst art style that truly captured modern life in paintings and more often than not impressionists favored painting outdoors – mainly to capture the eàect of light on objects. Impressionism is also considered a Õrst and true modern art style because it tries to capture the “depth, senses, and motions of everyday life through colors, loose brushstrokes, and blurry Õgure” (“French Impressionism”, n.d.). What better example of a painting to showcase the impressionism style than that of the Rouen Cathedral series by famed impressionists Claude Monet. IN this series of paintings, Monet tries to capture the “passage of time in his portrayal of light” (Impressionism”, 2018), the paintings showcase the facade of the Rouen Cathedral at diàerent times of the day and year – an idea on Monet’s which was intended to show how an object could be transformed by properties around it such as light. See the Image and Data Resources Open Access Policy, CC0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=57669452 Unlike impressionism style paintings that try to capture real life as seen by the artists themselves, the painting above isn’t a true reÖection of what the city of Toledo looked like during those years – as this description of the painting puts it, “The perspective of the city is the eastern side as seen from the north. However, the artist wanted to include the cathedral, which would not have been visible from the chosen perspective, so he moved it to the left of the old Moorish Alcazar.” ("View of Toledo", n.d.) You have written in a scholarly manner including citations, references, and thorough in depth descriptions of the Impressionist art movement. I particularly like how you have compared Impressionism with Mannerism (occurred in the later years of the High Renaissance). Great job. I like how you put "capture real life as seen by the artists" that opened my mind to look at Impressionism in a diàerent way, thank you. 38 words Permalink | Show parent | Reply Re: Discussion 6 by Kay Davids - Monday, 23 December 2019, 12:17 AM Hello Ajibola,/ You've submitted a thorough and eàective analysis of Impressionist art. The paintings you've chosen are great examples of light, colour and brush strokes used by impressionists. Choosing the same subject by the same artist allows us, the viewer, to compare and contrast the artist's ability to show depth and motion. The paintings of the cathedral look like they were done on diàerent days, at diàerent times of the day. This gives a diàerent feeling to each of the artworks, it is so simple yet so eàective. I Õnd it astounding. Great job. 94 words Permalink | Show parent | Reply Re: Discussion 6 by Maureen Tang - Wednesday, 25 December 2019, 8:15 AM Hi Ajibola, Your essay is very interesting. I like how you show 3 paintings of the same French cathedral at diàerent times of the day, so the lighting eàect is diàerent in each of the paintings. That Toledo painting is scary. From what I know, Toledo is a very beautiful place in Spain and their cathedrals are gorgeous. It is a place that I hope to visit in the near future. Thanks for sharing your insights. 76 words Permalink | Show parent | Reply Re: Discussion 6 by Xiaoling Chen - Wednesday, 25 December 2019, 3:01 PM Thank you for sharing your analysis of Impressionist art. 9 words Permalink | Show parent | Reply Re: Discussion 6 by Martin Eshun - Wednesday, 25 December 2019, 8:12 PM Hey mate, I guess we all did agree on that the statement that impressionism is the Õrst, true modern art style. Nice post mate keep it up. 38 words Permalink | Show parent | Reply Re: Discussion 6 by Alexis Cornmesser - Wednesday, 25 December 2019, 8:52 PM/ Though I disagree with Impression being the Õrst iteration of modern art I do appreciate your perspective. I love your descriptions of impressionism, 23 words Permalink | Show parent | Reply Re: Discussion 6 by Alison Binger (Instructor) - Friday, 20 December 2019, 12:31 PM Hi Class, Impressionism is one of my favorite art movements. Not only did they expand the art world to include individual creativity but they tried to get at the essence of what it means to be alive. To Õnd that live feeling in the painting these artists tend to include sunlight, colors, and movement. I am sending everyone several videos that I created for my art students. These will give a greater breadth of knowledge of Monet's, Degas's, Cassatt's, and van Gogh (post-impressionist). The videos are around 2 minutes in length. If you have volume, turn it up so you can hear the music that goes along with the images. Thank you.
