SOCS-350N Week 5 Discussion: The Glass Ceiling The Glass Ceiling The Glass Ceiling (graded) We often hear about the "glass ceiling." Does it exist? Are there invisible barriers to... advancement that impact some groups more than others? Use examples from the course reading to support your points, and feel free to share your own experiences with the glass ceiling. The Glass Ceiling - Any Experiences? I'm sure there are many people burdened by "glass ceilings" at their workplace. The first person I think of is my Mother. She has a high school education and has done accounts reviewable for the same construction company for 25 years. The company is struggling, the owner passed away and now his son runs the company- with much less compassion than his father did. She feels incredibly insecure at work and wants to get a better, more reliable job elsewhere. But, she's either under-qualified die to her lack of college degree and they won't recognize her experience, or she's over-qualified and they don't want to pay her what she's worth. She has reached a glass ceiling and can't go anywhere. Unfortunately, this sort of situation happens all over. Whether it be for experience, age, gender, or ethnicity. You will feel stuck in their jobs or careers. This is one of the reasons I chose nursing as a career, because there are not a lot of glass ceilings. I can always go somewhere else or try something new. Forbes Magazine List of the Top Earning CEOs - Why? White men have held the position of power for so long, and their money has such deep roots that the chance of a woman or a minority working their way up the Forbes list is extremely difficult. Unless the inherit the money or the company, working their way up in to those high power positions would be a feat of immense magnitude. It's not impossible, but would very difficult. People in positions of power don't want to give up their position. I found this article, also on forbes.com which claims that the lack of minorities is due to a lack of minority entrepreneurs, but I think the barrier is not for a lack of entrepreneurs, but rather an excess of barriers for those people (Robehmed, 2013).
