Nicole Chapman Lab, Week #1 BALANCE LAB Introduction The purpose of this lab is to use 2 different devices, a centigram balance and an electronic balance to measure objects and see which is more ... accurate. Summary We are investigating a centigram balance as well as an electronic balance in this experiment. We want to weigh items on both scales to see which is a more accurate. We’ll use direct weighing and weighing by difference. Findings One of my major findings in this experiment was that the electronic balance scale seemed more accurate than the centigram balance scale. Procedure Gather equipment needed: Centigram scale, electronic balance scale, 100ml beaker, 5 copper slugs, 2 unknowns. Place a copper slug on the centigram scale and weigh it, record its weight (direct weighing). Remove copper slug from scale and place the beaker on it, record weight. Keeping the beaker on scale, place 1 copper slug into it and record the weight of the beaker and slug together (weighing by difference). Finally, subtract the weight of beaker & slug from the beaker, and you’ll have the mass of the slug. Next, move on to your electronic balance scale, place 1 copper slug on scale, record weight. Remove slug, and place beaker on the scale, record weight, add a copper slug to the beaker, record weight. Again, subtract the weight of the beaker and slug from the weight of the beaker and you’ll have the mass of your slug. Lastly, record the mass of 1 slug, then add one at a time recording weight each time. Do this for 5 slugs. When done, average all 5 weights to find the mass of one slug.
