CHEM120: Week 5, Lab Name: Laboratory 7: Building models of Organic compounds Learning Objectives: Learn about structure of organic compounds by building models Draw extended structural f... ormulas of Organic compounds Compounds that are based on the carbon atom are known as organic compounds. These compounds commonly contain, nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen in addition to carbon. Carbon forms a variety of covalent compounds with varied properties. Carbon containing compounds are formed with nonmetals by sharing electrons (covalent bonds). Most biomolecules as well as most drugs are classified as organic compounds. In this laboratory exercise, we will build models of organic compounds and draw extended structural formula of organic compounds. Materials: Molecular Modeling Kit Note: Be sure to build each of the compounds as instructed using the model kit. This hands-on experience is an important part of this lab. Please take the time to explore the structures of these organic compounds. Exploration 1: Hydrocarbons (Complete before class) Hydrocarbons are a diverse group of organic compounds containing carbon and hydrogen. Hydrocarbons can be linear, branched, or cyclic. Hydrocarbons can be saturated, unsaturated or aromatic. Part 1A: Definitions Hydrocarbon: A compound of only hydrogen and carbon. Saturated hydrocarbon: A carbon atom that is bonded with the maximum number of hydrogen atoms. They are also called Alkanes. Unsaturated hydrocarbon: A carbon atom that can become saturated by adding more hydrogen atoms. Part 1B: Naming of Hydrocarbons Linear hydrocarbons can be divided in three categories- Alkane, alkene and alkyne. Complete the table below for naming the linear hydrocarbons. Number of Carbon Atoms Prefix Alkane Alkene Alkyne 1 Meth Methane Methylene Methyne 2 Eth Ethane Ethylene Ethyne 3 Prop 4 But 5 Pent 6 Hex Hexane Hexene Hexyne 7 Hept 8 Oct 9 Non 10 Dec [Show More]
