Biology > STUDY GUIDE > Southern Methodist University - BIOL 3350Ch 12 - Membrane Transport - handouts (All)
To survive and grow, cells must be able to import nutrients and eliminate waste products Examples of things a cell is in constant need of exchanging: • Gases: CO 2, O2 • Inorganic Ions: H+, N... a+, K+, Ca2+, Cl-, Mg2+, HCO3- • Metabolites: sugars, amino acids, nucleotides • Water Cell membranes contain specialized transport proteins The membrane alone is NOT freely permeable to all of these. Dissolved gases and hydrophobic molecules pass readily through membranes. Small uncharged molecules cross a membrane more slowly. Large uncharged molecules can cross a membrane, but too slowly to be helpful to the cell. Ions, with their high charge to mass rarely pass through the bilayer [Show More]
