Winder-barrow High School - SCI 1000145001smores stoichiometry lab

Document Content and Description Below

S’mores: Gr2M6Cc8 Name ______________________________ pd _____ PURPOSE: 1. To gain an understanding of reactants and products in a chemical reaction. 2. To perform calculations similar to those th... at will be done in stoichiometry. 3. To learn what excess and limiting reactants are and their effect on yield. MATERIALS: S’more Kit (graham crackers, chocolate, marshmallows) Paper Plate Microwave Oven Recipe for S’mores: 2 graham cracker squares (Gr) 6 miniature marshmallows (M) 8 chocolate chips (Cc) Place one graham cracker square on the paper plate. Place the marshmallows and chocolate chips on top of the cracker. Place the second graham cracker square on top. Microwave for 20 seconds, or until the chocolate and marshmallows are softened. A. A recipe is a type of balanced chemical equation, where the ingredients are the reactants and you eat the products. 1. Write the recipe for S’mores as a balanced chemical reaction. 2. What type of chemical reaction is this? Following the recipe/chemical equation precisely, make as many S’mores as possible. (DO NOT heat and/or eat them yet!) 3. How many S’mores could you produce? 4. Why couldn’t you produce any more? In chemistry the reactant that limits the amount of product that can be formed is called the limiting reactant. Any reactant that remains after the limiting reactant is used up is called the excess reactant. 5. Which was your limiting reactant ____________ and which was your excess reactant(s)? _____________ B. Use your kit / S’mores, as needed, to answer the following questions. 1. How many marshmallow “molecules” are needed to produce 1 “formula unit” of S’mores? ____ M molecules  1 Gr2M6Cc8 formula units 2. How many marshmallow molecules are needed to produce 1000 formula units of S’mores? ___,000 M molecules  1,000 Gr2M6Cc8formula units 3. How many moles of marshmallow are needed to produce one mole of S’mores? ____moles M  1 moles Gr2M6Cc8 4. What is the ratio of moles of marshmallow to moles of S’mores? ____ mol M : ____ mol Gr2M6Cc8 [Show More]
