Obesity is one of the leading preventable causes of death that significantly affects teenagers in the United States. Public health professionals contend that obesity is an epidemic among youths due to poor diet and lifestyle choices (Stanford Children's Health, 2019). Health disparities in teenage obesity manifest depending on the community socioeconomic status with teens in the lower SES communities exhibiting higher rate of obesity than those belonging to higher SES communities (Balentine & Stoppler, 2019). In the community, there are significant resources that support prevention of teenage obesity such as physical activity community strategies, healthy food service guidelines, salad bars in schools, and early care and education, among other programs. According to CDC, teenage obesity is a serious health problem affecting approximately 13.5 million people between the ages of 6 and 19 years. It is estimated that 1 in 5 young people has obesity in the United States. Obesity prevalence is about 18.9%, 19.9%, and 10.9% among teenagers in in the low, middle, and high income groups, respectively (CDC, 2019). Obesity is attributed to several causative factors such as individual behavioral and physiological characteristics that include genetics and physical activity. Some of the behavioral aspects associated with obesity consist of physical inactivity, medications, food choices, and other exposures. Other contributing factors include genetics, unhealthy food promotions, psychological factors (stress and emotional aspects), and the level of food intake as well as physical activity.
