When Equiano first arrived at the coast and saw th... e slave ship saw it was waiting for its cargo, Equiano emotions were filled with terror because he realized that the cargo that the slave ship was waiting on was him and people like him. He was so shocked by this discovery that his emotions of “horror and anguish” overpowered him and he fainted on the deck. Having found people of his own nation, it gave him a peace of mind, Also, he saw repercussions what would happen to him if he did decide to kill himself by jumping overboard. 2. What were the conditions aboard the slave ship? How do you account for the behavior of the ship’s crew as described by Equiano? The conditions on the ship were very unsavory and unsanitary for anybody to live in. The stench of the air that they had to breathe in was so intolerable that some of the slaves were permitted to stay on the deck for fresh air. There wasn’t any room for the slaves to move around it was almost to the point of suffocation for them. Having them all confined together made it possible for many of them to get sick, and many died because of whatever sickness one person got in the confined area they were in they all got it. They treated them as if they brutes, the ship’s crew would flog them without any mercy and if they died because of the savage and unmerciful beating, the ship’s crew would dispose of them. 3.
