Experiment 1: Safety and Equipment in the Lab Required reading: Ebbing, 11th Edition Chapter 1. Chemistry and Measurements. -Law of Conservation of mass - Matter: Physical state and Chemical consti... tution - SI Units - Derived Units Learning Goals:  To follow a procedure.  To learn about safety rules  To build a library of glassware/equipment and their use  To classify glassware depending on its use in the lab  To record data in an organized manner.  To generate an informal report. Background information and theory: Safety in the chemistry lab is fundamental. Before starting any experiment, students must be familiarized with safety rules and should know the toxicity of the substances that will be used, this toxicity is usually found in the SDS (safety data sheets) available online for all chemicals. A list of basic safety rules in the lab is provided on page 5. Following these rules ensures that each lab will be completed without major incidents. Most labs have a series of safety equipment available in case of accident including safety showers, eye wash stations, spill kits, fire extinguishers, etc. During this semester you will not be performing experiments in the lab, however you must be familiarized with safe procedures as you will be doing some chemistry experiments at home this semester. In a lab facility, students are provided with glassware and equipment to work during the semester. Even though you won’t be using these instruments, you need to get familiarized with how these instruments look like and their function. Equipment and glassware can be classified based on its function. There is glassware used to measure volume and dispense liquids like graduated cylinders and pipets, there is glassware that can be used to heat samples like beakers. There is equipment to heat up samples like heating plates or Bunsen burners and other equipment to determine the mass of samples as balances. In this first activity you will become familiarized with some safety rules and you will learn by doing some research, about the most common equipment and materials used in a chemistry lab. In the next page you can find a copy of the safety rules for all Chemistry courses at Lone Star College-Cy-Fair.Lone Star College – CyFair General Chemistry 1411 Safety Agreement As a student enrolled in Chemistry at Lone Star College - CyFair, I agree to use good laboratory safety practices at all times. I will: 1. Wear approved safety glasses or goggles and aprons when necessary. [Safety goggles may be purchased in the bookstore.] 2. Be aware of the location of safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, fire blankets, spill kits and first aid kits. 3. Never bring food or drink into the lab. 4. Wash my hands before and after performing laboratory experiments. 5. Never place chemicals, pens, pencils, glassware, etc… in my mouth, nor apply makeup, while in the laboratory. 6. Read the labels on all chemical containers before using their contents. 7. Dispose of chemicals as directed by the instructor. At no time will I pour anything down the sink without prior instruction. 8. Dispose of broken glass and/or sharps only in the designated containers for said items. 9. Always RETURN chemicals, equipment & other items to the designated place or on the cart. 10. Report all accidents, including chemical spills, to the instructor immediately. Never try to conceal an accident or spill. 11. Keep my bench area free of clutter during an experiment. 12. Keep long hair and loose clothing constrained during experimentation. Understand that open-toed shoes pose a hazard during laboratory classes and are NOT allowed in the chemistry laboratory. Understand that contact lenses are an added safety risk. 13. Never inhale fumes emitted during an experiment and use the fume hood when instructed to do so. 14. Clean my work area and all glassware before leaving the lab room. 15. DO NOT discard waste, paper, trash and other products down the sink. 16. DO NOT unplug, displace or alter any electronic equipment in the lab such as Digital balances and Spec. meters. 17.
