Response: Nurses need nursing informatics competencies because it is used in our daily practice, and reinforces our decision making. Nurses have the most communication with patients, and interact with technology more frequently (Darvish, Keyhanian, Bahramnezhed, & Navedhamidi, 2014). Companies want to instill their values permitting that their employees are loyal, compliant, and avoids risk (McGonigle, 2015). Before beginning this course I did not think much of nursing informatics. I have never been a computer savvy person. However, since beginning this course I have realized just how important nursing informatics is to my practice. I am able to recognize things throughout my shift now involving informatics, where as before I did not. With nursing informatics, I am able to care for my patients more properly and safely. Informatics is obviously used throughout the majority of our patient’s care, yet we also use it for our personal use. It allows for us to perform continued education online for license renewal, and we are able to use things such as simulators to practice mock codes or disaster like situations. One concern I have seen involving nursing informatics, is nurses are not receiving the proper training when it comes to computer training or other type of equipment being used throughout their department. For example: in the emergency department if a patient presents with a GI bleed and needs rapid infusion of blood or fluids the nurse needs to be able to program and operate the rapid infuser properly.
