Main Title: Colin Powell: Leadership Mary Kidder Penn State: World CampusColin Powell 2 Main Title: Colin Powell: Leadership The United States Army has its own philosophy on leadership. Leadershi... p defined by the Army is: influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization. This Army philosophy of leadership is called "Be, Know, Do". "Be" is being who you are, a leader of character. This describes his or her inner strengths to always do the right things, regardless of the circumstances while also reflecting upon behavior. "Know" is recognizing the skills that are necessary in his or her success. We can classify these four types of skills as interpersonal, which is the knowledge of people and how to work with them, conceptual is the ability to understand and apply the doctrine required to do one's job, technical would be the knowledge of how to use equipment, and tactical skills are the mastery of the art of tactics. "Do" is about how a leader carries out decisions and leads. (Schawbel 2012) While Colin Powell has many different leadership traits, he possesses all of these traits as well. Colin Powell was stated "The day soldiers stop bring you their problems, is the day you stop leading them. They have either lost their confidence that you can help them or concluded that you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership". From this we can conclude that he carried out his leadership by always being concerned with the welfare of his soldiers. Often at times, when people become leaders, he or she loses the interaction that they once had with his or her subordinates. Today, many companies do not have an 'open door policy'; company's however, have a chain-of-command policy. This can often time cause subordinates to feel as though his or her leaders are not concerned with issues or well-being. As leaders, it must be a priority that all should feel valued [Show More]
