APHY 101 Sheep Kidney Dissection. Abstract The focus of this experiment is on the dissection of a kidney. The human urinary system consists of two kidneys, two ureters, one urinary bladder, a... nd one urethra. This system has two basic functions, both of which occur in the kidneys. The first function is to remove nitrogenous wastes (such as creatine, urea, and uric acid) from the body. The second function is to maintain the electrolyte, acid-base, and fluid balances of the blood. The four primary components to a kidney are the renal capsule, renal cortex, medullary region, and renal pelvis. The purpose of this experiment is to examine the internal and external anatomy of the kidney. The materials needed to complete the exercise are a sheep kidney, gown, gloves, dissecting tools, and a tray. To begin, the steps to successfully complete the dissection are explained in detail. The following structures to identify are the calyx, cortex, hilus, medulla, renal columns, renal papilla, renal pelvis, renal pyramids, and ureter if present. What I find most intriguing is how complex the inner workings of the urinary system really is. The urinary bladder can store up to 500 ml of urine in women and 700 ml in men. People already feel the need to urinate (pee) when their bladder has between 200 and 350 ml of urine in it. When you empty your bladder, the muscle in your bladder wall tightens to squeeze the urine out of your bladder, while at the same time the sphincter muscles at the base of your bladder relax, allowing the urine to flow out through your urethra. The ability to hold your urine and pass urine is complex and involves the coordination of muscles, nerve signals and hormones, which is regulated by the brain and the spinal cord. I am pleased with the outcome of the experiment, and I am happy I was able to take part in it. I don’t see the need for any improvements because everything is explained in a manner that is easy to follow and understand. References InformedHealth.org, (2018). How does the urinary system work?
