2.1.10 Practice English 11 Sem 1 May 9th, 2019 Whitman VS Dickinson: Two Poems Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson are two of history’s most renowned poets. Both authors centered many of their wor... ks around the topics of nature, death, and immortality. Though their writing styles varied immensely, Dickinson and Whitman both succeeded in creating masterful pieces, leaving a deep mark in society. Two particular poems, Dickinson’s 324 and Whitman’s When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer, deal with a single topic: appreciating nature rather than being engulfed by mainstream education. Whitman and Dickinson both utilize repetition in various ways while coming to similar conclusions about their subject matter. In Dickinson’s poem, 324, she embodies a bird. Although some attend church on sundays, she stays home; her church is an orchard, with a choir made of songbirds. She doesn’t dress herself up in special clothing for service, but comes as she is, wearing nothing but her wings. The sexton of her church, rather than ringing a bell, simply sings. Instead of an earthly man giving the sermon, she claims God himself preaches; she refers to him as a “noted clergyman”, or an excellent pastor.
