EDUC 5210 Unit 5 Discussion Schunk (2012) presents a table on page 38 which summarizes 14 major brain structures and their functions. Based on the information presented by Schunk, areas of the brain... whose functions are immensely relevant in my visual arts classroom are the occipital lobe, the corpus callosum and the prefrontal cortex. While they are not the only relevant choices, both the nature of the subject and my largely constructivist approach to teaching make these two areas particularly significant. Two factors strongly influence whether the brain pays attention to a piece of information: 1. If the information has meaning. 2. If the information causes an emotional response. (Learning Strategies The Adolescent Brain –Learning Strategies & Teaching Tips, 2008) These two factors will be considered in my discussion. Occipital Lobe & Corpus Callosum Without a doubt, processing visual information is the “abc” of the visual arts. Processing visual information consists of two steps: taking in the image and interpreting the image. I have chosen both of these areas of the brain, as they work together or that to happen. According to Schunk, the occipital lobe, sometimes called the visual cortex is the area of the brain which processes visual information and the corpus callosum connects the two hemispheres of the brain, both of which play a role in processing constructing meaning of visual information.
