Activism in the 60s: A Comparison of the Black Panther Party and the American Indian Movement

Document Content and Description Below

Pick one of the chapters from They Should Have Served that Cup of Coffee: 7 Radicals Remember the 60s. Pick a social justice movement or activist organization in the assigned text and compare and cont... rast it with another social justice movement or activist organization from the 60s and early 70s (before 1976) within the continental United States, which is NOT in the text. The goals and/or the strategies employed by the movements or organizations may be similar or highly dissimilar as in the example of The Black Revolutionary Workers League and the Stonewall Riots. As you compare and contrast the two social justice movements/organizations, you should try to include the following points: • Clear statement of the social justice issue. • Historical period of the issue (ex: 1961,1964-66,1968-72) and location (ex: San Antonio, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Puerto Rico, Pearl Harbor, Detroit, Appalachia). Be as specific as possible. • Brief summary of the main problems that compose the social justice issue which you have chosen, which movements, organizations, and/or leaders were involved in trying to address this issue, what challenges these leaders faced, and what strategies were being used. • Has there been any resolution (positive or negative) to their issue? How successful have the attempts to address this issue been? What is/are the long term impact(s) of the efforts to solve this social justice issue? • Where applicable, what parts of your book highlighted or illuminated information we have discussed in class or class readings? • Your special interest or why did you pick this particular social justice issue? Here are some ideas for social justice movements which are not in your text: the Environmental Movement, the American Indian Movement (AIM), freedom movements of Chicanos, Filipinos, Puerto Ricans, and other ethnic or racial groups; organizations of welfare recipients or tenants; groups that are doing community organizing; the religious and pacifist groups that played important roles in the anti-war movement [Vietnam]; and GLBTQ movements.
