Urinary system is the principle means of waste excretion in the body. o The digestive system and the respiratory system help.  Where do the waste products come from? o A process called metabolis... m in our body. It produces waste products in our body that if not removed can become toxic.  Kidneys are primary organ that separates the metabolic waste products from the blood. o Must decide which chemicals and fluids are useful to the body  Urinary system consists of 6 organs: 2 kidneys, 2 ureters, bladder, and urethra  Basic functions of the kidneys: o Primary filter in the body that separates metabolic waste from useful chemicals o Help to regulate blood volume by conserving or eliminating water from the body o Play a major role in regulating blood pressure o Help to produce Erythropoietin which is a substance/hormone that stimulates the production of rbc. o Regulate the osmolarity of our body fluids by controlling the amount of water and solutes that are eliminated or conserved.  Glomerulus- how our kidneys filter the blood plasma o It’s a small tuft of capillaries inside the kidney  Gross anatomy of the kidney: o Only 150grams, 11cm long, 6cm wide, and 3cm thick.
