Document Content and Description Below

Many variables in medicine follow a normal distribution where there are approximately an equal number of values below the mean as above the mean. Describe two variables that would probably follow a ... normal distribution. Also note which of the two variables would be likely to have a larger standard deviation and why. As an alternative question, what are some other potential probability distributions in the health care field such as bimodal, skewed, or exponential and give variables that would probably follow that distribution. The normal distribution is defined by the mean and standard deviation of a set of quantitative/numerical data. The mean determines the location of the curve on the xaxis of a graph and the standard deviation determines the height of the curve on the yaxis (Holmes, et al., 2017).Normal distribution is symmetrical and shaped a bit like a bell (Bell Curve). Systolic blood pressure in healthy adults has a normal distribution with mean 112 mmHg and standard deviation 10 mmHg. Most healthy adults have systolic blood pressure between 102 and 122 mmHg. However, blood pressure readings are affected by a variety of factors including stress levels, diet, and duration and frequency of exercise. Moreover, height is another example of a variable that follows a normal distribution. If you took the height of one hundred 25-year-old women and created a histogram by plotting height on the x-axis, and the frequency at which each of the heights occurred on the y-axis, you would get a normal distribution. Furthermore, skewed distributions are asymmetrical and have data that clusters toward one end (Holmes, et al., 2017). An example would be surgery time. There is some minimum time that the surgery will take, and it obviously cannot take less that 0 minutes. [Show More]
