NR 439 Entire Course Week 1 to 8, Assignment, Discussion Questions. GRADED A+

Document Content and Description Below

Week 1: Role of Research and the Importance of the Searchable Clinical Question (graded) Research is a fundamental role that every nurses plays but in different ways. How do you fulfill the researc... h role now? What trends have created a push for nursing practice based on evidence? As you contemplate your role in the research process, read the assigned Week 1 Case Study and formulate one searchable, clinical question in the PICO (T) format. There are several potential questions that could be asked. Identify if the focus of your question is assessment, etiology, treatment, or prognosis. Remember to integrate references. Right now my role in nursing research is completed through education and learning about nursing research and its role in nursing. As a nurse in the field working my role as a nurse in regards to research, is monitoring the changes in patients, the trends I see, trying things to see if something works better one way than another. As our lesson noted, “Others share research knowledge with colleagues and participate in research-related activities or research projects, while yet another group acts as principle investigators to produce research and publish the findings” (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2016). I participate in research in such a capacity at my work. In my practice the nurses are part of a POD, made up of 4 nurses and one Doctor. Over the last year I have been part of a group of nurses who represented each POD in a smaller group of “nurse champions.” We met and discussed policies and procedures we tried within our own PODs that may be beneficial to other PODs. We discussed things that worked for us, and things that did not. Different PODs tried changing certain things and reported to the larger group if it worked, and then it became company-wide policy throughout all the PODs. I think I represent the notion that, “To fully implement evidence-based practice (EBP), nurses need to have both a spirit of inquiry and a culture that supports it” (Stillwell et al., 2010). I believe that trends of increasing formal education and training and varying levels of nurses, has made a push for nursing practice based upon evidence. Questions that I formed from the Case study are: 1. Could better discharge planning result in fewer readmissions? P: patient’s being discharged I: discharge planning quality C: poor discharge instructions and planning before discharge O: fewer readmissions T: n/a 2. Does adding prednisone to a well-controlled diabetic’s medication regimen increase blood sugar? P = diabetic patients I = prescribed prednisone C = no steroid use O = increased blood sugar T = during medication use References Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2016. Formulate searchable, clinical questions in the PICO(T) format for your nursing clinical issue. Next, review the guidelines for the Research Database Assignment due Week 3. Use your PICO elements to search for ONE research database that is relevant to your nursing clinical issue. Identify the name of the database or data source, its web address (URL), and briefly describe how it is relevant to your nursing clinical issue. One nursing clinical question I would like to research is: does having access to a patient portal improve patient’s compliance to their plan of care? P: patients in a primary care office I: having an accessable, functioning patient portal C: not having a patient portal, only records provided as requested during office visits O: improved compliance to plan of care from PCP T: n/a The database I used to search for relevant information about my question is EBSCO. Chamberlain College of Nursing students can access EBSCO at : http://search.ebscohost.com.proxy.chamberlain.edu:8080/Community.aspx? authtype=ip&ugt=723731663C1635773796356632253E3221E363D36013689364E321E3301336 03&IsAdminMobile=N&encid=22D731263C5635973716357632453C17313373C370C378C374C 371C370C376C33013&selectServicesToken=AxtjOr9wxViurgaH5C2RsteRRTQeEcWop88eNqvIOF2O1SAw8nC855_1mr4Qh3Jmjjlc3JkW73cMiokHnBEjR NtBGiHhHYXKV78ib9KePcv4LdUF5QhPKEEMwWkrjNyptl0THAAf9PFTtWbmgmRRgg3jJsWUNHGZLIc0ZmPu krXvFaO6ldmAFJZQUzjbbOU10HgmMCR8iehYSfFesEbDYaXjowYKn7SRIYYlgBhgjNxU6- ptM4yAHf4m8f4M8KnRrbdUCTsES0OdeQ4-pIJhvsNNFS77H6l1X5-Q. EBSCO is relevant to the question I pose as it is easy to use, and reputable. EBSCO is a well-known database, which is easy to search, and searches numerous medical journals, as well as many other types of articles which have been published. The articles are searchable by author type, peer-reviewed, date, topics, search terms, categories, etc. According to EBSCO, “EBSCO’s long-standing, dynamic leaders create the stability and creativity needed to provide world-class service and to help EBSCO design resources for the next generation of libraries” (EBSCO.com, 2016). When I consider the goal of step 2 in the research process: to review related literature to demonstrate the significance of the topic and other research that has been published, I think EBSCO is a great asset to use as a database to find related material to refer to in my future assignment (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2016). The design identifies the major components of the study. It is important to remember that there is no one best design for a research study. Define qualitative and quantitative research designs. After you review the designs, describe which research design you would expect to find when searching for evidence relevant to your own research question. Why? Explain your answer. Qualitative research focuses more on exploratory issues. It helps to explore reasons and opinions. It helps understand why something is. It does not investigate cause and effect. It is often the basis for theories. Quantitative research investigates cause and effect. It deals with information that can be translated into measurable data. Quantitative research often tests theories. I would expect to find a combination of both types of research, as well as mixed method, when searching for evidence relative to my research question: does having access to a patient portal improve patient’s compliance to their plan of care over the course of a year? The question I am researching could easily be expressed as a theory, suggesting qualitative research can be found. Additionally, I think quantitative research will be found examining compliance percentage between patients who have access to an online patient portal, and patients who do not have portal access. Quantitative data will need to be found to either prove or disprove my question, and qualitative research will help to explain why the quantitative data is so. Define these terms with respect to research and explain why they are important. Consider data collection and measure methods as you read the following online or after you download it. Retrieved from http://nursingworld.org/MainMenuCategories/ThePracticeofProfessional Nursing/workforce/Fast-Facts-2014-Nursing-Workforce.pdf Review these facts and describe what the results say about this sample of the nursing workforce. What do you believe was the intent of the researcher who designed the survey? According to Houser, “Summarizing descriptive data is the first step in the analysis of quantitative research data” (Houser 285). According to our lesson, the tools of data collection are: physiological measures, psychometric measures, interviews and questionaires, and observations. These tools need to be reliable and valid. As explained by our lesson, “Reliable instruments measure a variable with precision. Valid instruments measure in a manner that is accurate and truthful” (CCN, 2016). [Show More]
