It can affect not only the quality of life of a person but their mental and physical health as well (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion [ODPHP], n.d.). This access is affected by the rising costs of both healthcare and insurance coverage. It can also be hard to find healthcare depending on where someone lives and that healthcare may not be culturally competent (ODPHP, n.d.). The state of well-being of the healthcare industry is not good. The United States spends double the amount on health as compared to 10 other countries (Tikkanen, & Abrams, 2020). Even with that much spent on healthcare the U.S. still has a higher incidence of chronic disease and obesity (Tikkanen, & Abrams, 2020). There are not enough primary care physicians which also leads to a decrease in the availability of healthcare (Tikkanen, & Abrams, 2020). Economic Theories Healthcare can be a service provided or a product provided but it is complicated to apply economic principles to it. One principle that can be applied is resource allocation, which is how best to use assets to maximize the support of the organization (Scott, Solomon, & McGowan, 2001). Patients who have insurance are rarely concerned with the cost of treatment or if it is a good use of resources.
