You_Decide_Census_Paper.doc Week 6 Assignment: You Decide Census Paper SOCS187N: Culture and Society What the Census Might Have Called Me The first cens... us in the 1790s by the US Census Bureau collected data on three racial categories that include free whites, all other free persons, and slaves. These categories were representative of the socioeconomic segmentation of individuals in the society. If I were present in the 1970s, I would have been categorised under the free persons until the 1850s when Mulatto was introduced. Over the years, census is being used to collect data that reflect the changes in the society caused by social, political, and economic factors. The rise of civil rights movements, immigration and emancipation are some of the issues that have contributed to the transformation of how the Census Bureau collects population data (Pew Research Center, 2020). Multi-racial categories have since been introduced to capture different groups in the US population. In the recent 2010 Census, there were 63 possible race categories, six of which were for single races while the other 57 were derived from combined races (Parker et al., 2015). The 2010 census was different from the other Census conducted in the previous years as about 3 percent of Americans were found to be using more than one race (Pew Research Center, 2020). In this regard, race categories used in the 1790s census has since changed to capture different racial categories in the population. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . .. .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . .
