C361 XAP Task 2 A1 Healthcare problem C361 XAP Task 2 A1 Healthcare problem Palliative care is a multidisciplinary service of which hospice care is a part of and whose main goal is to aid in pro... viding relief from symptoms, pain, physical stress and mental stress of a terminal diagnosis. Healthcare currently is designed to cure an illness, but when someone is diagnosed with a terminal disease the direction of care should shift from not only cure but to management of symptoms. This change in direction can be seen by family as “giving up” on a patient and acknowledging the end. What Palliative Care is designed to do is acknowledge that this disease process is terminal and to maximize the time left by addressing the multiple realms important in palliative medicine: physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of patients and their families (Budnitz 2010). A2: Significance of problem Currently in United States there is a boom in Palliative care services. The aging Baby Boomer population has caused a large increase in the number of people who are being diagnosed with terminal diseases like: cancer, heart disease and neurological disorders. Many patients currently are diagnosed, treated and die with very little to no emotional and symptom management other than another pill prescribed by their treating doctors.
