These organizations use the most recent research to determine the best evidence based practices to implement throughout the hospital. Organizations implement quality improvement (QI) initiatives to improve the standard of care in the organization. A quality improvement initiative is defined as a set of actions proposed to monitor, analyze, and improve the quality of care in order to improve healthcare outcomes (Coles et al., 2017). Quality improvement initiatives also lead to better system performances and a better professional development. These initiatives allow for performance comparisons to be made between other hospitals nationwide. This allows for continuous improvements to be made in healthcare settings throughout the nation. The quality improvement initiative that will be discussed in this paper was developed as a response to the growing number of central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The goal of the QI is to positively affect patient outcomes by reducing the number of CLABSIs from occurring in the healthcare setting.
