Martin Van Buren High School SOCIAL STUDIES 101 Objective: How did President Franklin D. Roosevelt use Fireside Chats to inspire confidence during the Great Depression? Contextualization: ... Closely examine the graph below and answer the three analysis questions that follow.Analysis Questions: 1) Contextualization: ​ American Households had no radios in 1920. In 1935 American Households had approximately 21 million. 2) Contextualization: ​When did the Great Depression start? The Great Depression started 1929. 3) Contextualization: ​When did President Roosevelt’s first term begin? 1933. 4) Contextualization: ​ Because when his term began around 1933 a lot of American households had radios. 5) Contextualization In 1930, most of the audience were the big businessmen and rich people who owned radios. I don’t think that Fireside Chats were an equitable way to reach and update Americans on the Great Depression because only 10% people owned radio during that time. He would address possible solutions to overcome the depression. I would hope for a positive tone which would give people expectation to overcome adversity.
