Rasmussen 2021 Chapter 21, 22, - IGGY 9th Ed What are the types of cancer therapy? - Surgery - Radiation - Chemotherapy Surgery (cancer treatment) - Removal of as much cancer as possible Ra... diation therapy - High levels of radiation to kill cancer cells, control the disease and provide symptom relief. Use locally often based on exposure and radiation dose. External beam radiation therapy - Radiation delivered from a source outside of the patient. Pt not radioactive. Brachytherapy (internal radiation therapy) - Radiation is delivered internally making the pt a source of radiation. Uses seeds placed inside pt. Chemotherapy - Treatment of cancer cells with the use of chemical agents that damages cell DNA and regulation. Systemic effects but can cause damage to normal health cells. Alkylating Agents - Inhibits cell division Antimetabolites - Counterfeit metabolites that fool cancer cells impairs cell division Antimitotic Agents - Interfere with the formation and actions of microtubules so cells cannot complete mitosis during cell division Anti-tumor Agents - Drugs that were originally developed as antibiotics that have effects on cancer cells. they damage the cell's DNA and interrupt DNA/RNA synthesis Topoisomerase inhibitors - Disrupt the enzyme (topoisomerase); this leads to DNA breakage and cell death Other chemotherapeutic agents - Those with mechanisms of action that are either unknown or don't fit other categories Surgical classification types - Prophylaxis, diagnosis, cure, control, palliation, assessing therapy effectiveness and reconstruction Prophylactic surgery for cancer - Removes potentially cancerous tissue as a prevention of cancer development Diagnostic surgery for cancer - Removal of all or part of a suspected lesion for examination to confirm or rule out cancer Exploratory surgery for cancer - Extensive approach if the cancer cannot be confirmed with less intensive means. Curative surgery for cancer - Removes all the cancer tissue. Done for many localized or noninvasive lesions. Cytoreductive surgery for cancer - Removes part of the tumor when removal of the whole mass is not possible. Decreases the size of the tumor when and the number of cancer cells. Palliative surgery for cancer - Focus on providing symptom relief and improving quality of life [Show More]
