UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING CPEN 211 – Introduction to Microcomputers 2015 Review for the ExamSlide Set 7: In class on Oct 21 we finished up t... he example of a datapath and controller for the exponent circuit in Slide Set 7. You should be able to translate an English language description of datapath circuit into a design and then into Verilog. You should be able to design a state machine to control a simple datapath much like you also did for Lab 6 and 7. You should know how to code up the state machine in Verilog following the style guidelines. Note: The video recording for the Oct 21 lecture failed because a technician failed to configure the video system correctly that day. As stated in the course syllabus you are still responsible for lectures even if the video system didn’t work. Slide Set 8: This slide set was also covered on Oct 21, which was as noted above was not recorded. If you missed this lecture be sure to review Dally textbook Sections 10.1 through 10.4. Some (but not all) of the material on 2’s complement is also covered in in Chapter 3 of the second textbook computer organization and design. In lecture on Oct 21 we talked about representing negative numbers, and about how to build simple arithmetic circuits out of logic gates for addition and multiplication. You should know how a half adder differs from a full adder and how to build a carry propagate (also known as a ripple carry) adder. We discussed how to build a full adder out of a half adder by considering the different meanings of different outputs. You should know how to subtract numbers written in 2’s complement. You should be able to explain how to implement binary subtraction using a binary addition circuit. You should know what it means for 2’s complement addition to “overflow” and how to modify a carry propagate adder to enable it to detect when an overflow occurs. You should also understand how the multiplier circuit works [Show More]
